What is Interventional Radiology (IR)?

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is a well-established, specialised form of radiology in which highly trained doctors (Interventional Radiologists) diagnose and treat a diverse range of medical conditions.

An interventional radiologist utilises his training to fully interpret the imaging and perform the appropriate intervention/ treatment under imaging guidance as well as look after the patients before and after the procedure. The techniques used are minimally invasive, often performed through a tiny access into a blood vessel. Advanced imaging such as ultrasound, CT scan, MRI scan or X-ray scans are used to allow the interventional radiologist to see inside your body and guide their treatment with precision.

These procedures have been proven by a vast amount of medical research to be highly effective treatments for varicose veins, uterine fibroids, varicoceles, tumours and many other conditions with an ever expanding list. In a number of medical conditions, interventional radiology techniques are the preferred alternative to surgery worldwide. Well recognised advantages of these techniques include reduced risks, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and lower costs.

Interventional radiologists are doctors that have undergone specialist radiology training and undertaken several further years of sub-specialisation training in Interventional Radiology Auckland. At Lumina, both our interventional radiologists have undertaken sub-specialist training in Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and are leading figures in their respective departments in public hospitals within Auckland.
