Varicocele embolisation

What is a Varicocele?

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins in the scrotum as a result of poorly functioning valves in the vein taking blood away from this area back to the heart. Because these valves are not working properly, blood pools in these vessels. The pooling of blood in these vessels can reduce the function of the testicles reducing fertility, it can also cause pain in the scrotum.

How can Lumina IR treat Varicoceles?

Interventional radiologists treat varicoceles with a minimally invasive technique called Varicocele Embolisation that allows you to go home the same day after a quick procedure. We gain access into a blood vessel through a small needle (similar to having a blood test) and work a fine tube called a catheter through this to the vein that is causing the varicocele. We then block this abnormally functioning vessel with the use of a liquid agent to stop it creating pressure and preventing blood from draining effectively.

Varicocele Embolisation:

Varicocele embolisation is a procedure that is just as effective as more traditional surgery but with a much faster recovery and lower complications. It is performed worldwide and is accepted as the treatment of choice for men with varicoceles suffering from infertility.
