How Do Varicose Veins Develop?

Varicose veins can be frustrating to deal with, especially if they are causing you pain or uncomfort that affects work, relationships, and your overall health. At Lumina Interventional Radiology, our varicose vein treatment can help alleviate symptoms associated with your varicose veins.

But first, what causes varicose veins and how do varicose veins develop? In this blog, we will explore this in more depth.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins appear as a result of venous insufficiency – in simpler terms, this means that the blood flow from the veins to the heart is congested, causing the veins to twist and enlarge. This is often due to weak or damaged valves in the veins. Varicose veins commonly appear in the legs as standing and walking increases the pressure in the veins on your lower body.

Who is at Risk of Developing Varicose Veins?

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are more common in women and older adults, but there are also several risk factors that could increase the likelihood of developing varicose veins. This includes:

  • Family history – studies have shown that varicose veins tend to affect identical twins as well as those with family members who have had primary valvular failure
  • Age – as mentioned, varicose veins are more likely to appear with age
  • Pregnancy – hormonal changes and pressure on the iliac veins can increase the risk of developing varicose veins
  • Obesity – being overweight or obese causes increased intra-abdominal pressure
  • Not physically active/prolonged standing – if you continuously stand for long periods of time and/or do not regularly exercise, this leads to a lack of blood flow which can contribute to the development of varicose veins
  • Sex – women are more likely to develop varicose veins, particularly because of hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, menstrual periods, birth control) which relaxes the vein walls
